Where Did the Blogs Go?

You may have noticed that the blogroll has mysteriously disappeared from our sidebar.  If you are anything like me and use this list as your primary means of navigating the Asbury blogosphere a moment of panic is certainly justified.  But never fear!  The Asbury Bloggers Society is here to save the day.

You will now find our blogroll hosted at bottom of the ABS website (www.asburybloggers.net).  You can go there directly, or click the ABS banner in the left column and you will be redirected.  Please continue to check asburyblog.net frequently.  Our content hasn't changed.  We just wanted to refocus this space.

Asbury Bloggers Society Blog Post of the Week

Over January some of our students went to India for a class led by Dr. Steve Martin.  The class was called "Theology of Christian Leadership", and they exercised it in various ministry situations.  This post is from Chris over at randomthoughtsbyChris.blogspot.com.

"Music is, I think, one of the universal languages. It doesn't matter that there are an impressive variety of different styles, genres, and even tonal systems; no matter who you are, you will, on some level, appreciate music in one form or another"

Chris blogged about his experiences and so did Adam at his blog.

Cultivating Pastoral Imagination: Creative Practices of Faith with Writing

The Psalmists of the Old Testament desired deeply to commune with the Creator through words and poetry. There is something sacred and therapeutic about writing down our praises and laments, our admirations and grievances. How can the reading and writing of a psalm effect the Spirit? What role does creativity play in cultivating an atmosphere of contemplation in an individual? What is the role of language in communion with God? How do writers of faith fit in to contemporary literary culture? And how can writing aid a minister on the never-ending odyssey into the deep heart of God?

Every Monday this March (3, 10, 17, 24, 6-8pm) Asbury Seminary students will have the chance to engage in a dialogue with the creator, writer, critic, and part-time Asbury College professor David Harrity (http://davidharrity.blogspot.com), author of "Morning and What Has Come Since," will be leading a 4-week workshop on "Modern Psalmists." During each two-hour session, students will have the opportunity to see how writers are seeking to commune with God through poetry in literary culture right now. We'll be reading the poetry of contemporary authors, listening to discussions about elements of craft and vocation, conversing about the spiritual dynamics of creating art and literature, and spending time together in creative practice through writing exercises and workshop.

Blog Post of the Week Feb 4th

This is the first  in a new series here at Web Parish, the Blog Post of the week.  They are selected from the blogs of the Asbury Bloggers Society. This entry is from Alum Jeremy LaDuke and it is fitting as we enter into Lent.

from Highways to Zion.

"Have you ever had one of those moments when you kick yourself because you forgot your camera?  A couple of years ago Sarah and I were visiting family and we were in Bristol, TN where Sarah went to college and we drove past one of Bristol’s fine dining establishments – Ryan’s Steakhouse.  The place of every kids dreams because you automatically get desert with anything.  I am pretty sure you could go and just get a glass of water and still get desert.  Ryan’s is not a good place for a diabetic.  But as we were driving past Ryan’s and I had that “where is my camera” moment.  The sign in front of Ryan’s said, “Join us for Lent”.  I can’t even try to explain that one.  Join us at our super all you can eat buffet during your season of fasting.  Needless to say our culture does not quite understand the discipline of fasting. "
